He was the only remaining specimen of the Pinta Island tortoise and when he died, the Pinta Island tortoise subspecies became extinct. This animal was a giant male Galapagos tortoise that went by the name of Lonesome George. On June 24, 2012, the "rarest animal alive", according to the Guinness Book of World Records, died. Nineteen of these species are endemic to the archipelago, 11 of which are confined to single islands, and three species have been introduced.
